The
crucible
The crucible is based on the witch trial that
took place in 1692, in
Salem, Massachusetts. Elizabeth parris, daughter of reverend
Samuel
Parris, and Abigail William, his niece began acting strangely.
Since no
Medical cause for their behavior could be found, doctors concluded
that
The girls were bewitched; soon other girls began exhibiting the
same
Behavior, crying out the names of woman they knew and sparking the
Witch-hunt. Over the next eight months, twenty-seven people were
Convicted, nineteen were hanged; one was pressed to death, and
more
Than one hundred were imprisoned.
In
Arthur Miller's The Crucible Reverend Hale tells Elizabeth
Proctor that
"No principle, however
glorious" is worth dying for, and he argues that it is better
To give a false confession than
to die for a principle. The Crucible shows the
Power of
one individual's conscience as he challenges societies right to
Demonize
citizens on the basis of their beliefs. Lies of the crucible Lying has
Always
been considered to be one of the worst things man could do. Yet almost
Anyone who
has ever spoken a word in his or her life has lied at one point or
Another.
The truth is that lying comes naturally. Lying is an easy way out of
Situations
that could get us in trouble. It truly is an act of pure selfishness. In
Arthur
Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller shows what the consequences of lying
Are and
proves that “honesty is the best policy.
Early in the play Mary Warren argues that the
girls should confess to what
They were doing in the woods to avoid a severe
punishment. Mary Warren was
Not, however, doing the same things in the woods
that Abigail was going. Abigail
Was drinking blood and speaking in tongues in
addition to dancing naked in the
Woods. The punishment that Abigail might face
would naturally be harsher that
Than what Mary Warren might face. Abigail
rejects Mary Warren's advice and
Bullies her into agreement with a different plan
- along with the rest of the girls,
Including Tituba. Abigail insists that the
girls follow her lead and stick to the story
That she makes chooses for them to tell.
One of the themes of the crucible is religion. Religion is
woven into the
Everyday
life of the Salem of the play. Its exclusive form of Christianity centered
On a set
of clearly defined rules: you went to church every Sunday, you didn’t
Work on
the Sabbath, you believed the Gospel, you respected the minister’s
Word like
it was God’s, and so on. For people accused of witchcraft, any
Deviation
from These rules in the past can be used as evidence for much greater
Sins in
the Present. But ultimately, even good and respected and highly religious
Women like
Rebecca Nurse are accused and put to death, so past respectability
And
Religiosity doesn’t necessarily protect one.
Poppet symbolizes the uneasiness of the community. A poppet was
Something
that symbolized innocence and youth; however, because of one
Person’s
words the poppet becomes this evil thing that people begin to fear.
For
example, "I find here a poppet Goody Proctor keeps. I have found it, sir.
And
In the
belly of the poppet a needle's stuck." The poppet was a gift from Mary
Warren and
it got turned into a demonic and evil doll. Simply because Abigail
Williams
stuck herself in the stomach with a needle and blamed the voodoo doll
That Goody
Proctor kept. The story reminds us that man is not perfect, and that
We can
make Mistakes. However, even with these mistakes, we can clean
Ourselves
and Purify us by making what is wrong right. The sufferings become
